Immigration Law Courses

LAWS 572: Immigration and Naturalization Law

This foundational course explores the legal framework governing immigration and naturalization in the United States. Students will gain an understanding of immigration policies, procedures, and the roles of federal agencies involved in immigration law enforcement and adjudication.

LAWS 677: Immigration Consequences of Criminal Convictions

This course will explore the intersection of criminal and immigration law, and specifically, the consequences of criminal conduct, arrests and convictions, on individuals seeking to normalize their immigration status in the United States. The course will primarily explore what constitutes a conviction under U.S. immigration law, what are criminal grounds for inadmissibility to, and deportability from, the United States, and when a particular offense can trigger removability or bar relief from removal.

LAWS 713: Asylum Law

This course will supplement your education in the immigration and nationality discipline by focusing on law relating to persons coming to the United States after fleeing persecution in their home countries. Asylum law is based on a complex statutory and regulatory framework, nuanced administrative and judicial case law and international obligations.

Amanda Klay

Amanda Klay ’23

Immigrant Justice Corps Fellow, New Haven Legal Assistance Association

“I have the great privilege of serving as an Immigrant Justice Corps (IJC) Fellow at the New Haven Legal Assistance Association. IJC seeks to expand access to justice for the millions of undocumented immigrants facing the threat of deportation in our shared home. The challenges of navigating the ruthlessness and complexity of immigration court are numerous, and the stakes high. For this reason, compassionate counsel is essential. Connecticut is home to extraordinarily bright and public interest attorneys I am proud to call my colleagues, and we need more! In fields like removal defense where the vast majority of those in removal proceedings do not have access to legal counsel, the time to invest in radically expanding the capacity of the public interest practitioners of tomorrow is now."
